The semi-finals are set in both Men’s and Ladies’ European Mid-Amateur Team Championships.
The Ladies were off first in the second day of qualifying, once again catching most of the bad weather. Ireland was able to maintain its lead in the team standings. The Irish grabbed the number-1 seed in the semi-finals, helped by Shannon Burke’s best individual performance over 36-holes, at three-over-par.
Ireland will be up against Belgium, who were able to edge out Spain and secure the last berth in the Flight A bracket. The second semi-final will be a face-off between second place Germany, and this week’s home team France.
Spain did make it to the semi-finals in the men’s tournament, and with the number one seed indeed. The Spaniards ended up in the lead at the conclusion of a very tight race between all of the top four teams, breaking a tie at +9 with France. Playing in the ultimate flight, Adrian Mata Alsdorf signed an even-par 70, which gave his team the pole position.
Germany will be Spain’s opponent on Friday, as France will have to face round-1 leaders, Ireland. A long day of match play awaits the players, as each semi-final will consist of two morning foursomes, and three afternoon singles.
Spots in the very first gold-medal matches of the inaugural European Mid-Amateur Team Championships will be up for grabs on Friday in the south west of France.
