Lausanne, 21st March, 2016: The EGA and APGC successfully hold the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies together for the first time.
With both matches being played at the Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course, Europe’s men dominated the competition from Day 1 and claimed the Bonallack Trophy with a record 21½-10½ final result and fifth successive win against Asia-Pacific. On the final day, Mario Galiano (ESP), Luca Cianchetti (ITA), Stefano Mazzoli (ITA), Ashton Turner (ENG), Jack Hume (IRE), David Boote (WAL), Robin Petersson (SWE) and Jeroen Krietemeijer (NED) all added points toEurope’s leaderboard. Asia-Pacific, under the captaincy of Matt Cutler (AUS), had little chance to come back on the final day after the Europeans dominated the first two day’s sessions.
Whereas Boote, Cianchetti and Galiano had to accept one defeat each, Jack Hume, Robin Petersson and Jeroen Krietemeijer won all of their matches. Hume played four; Petersson and Krietemeijer, three.
The outcome of the ladies’ equivalent match was less predictable.
After a slow start, the European ladies had to recoup a four-point deficit from Day 1. Making up ground winning sessions three and four, the home side gave it their all on the last day. At times, the leaderboard even indicated a strong comeback and a potential win by Europe when Frida Kinhult (SWE), Laura Fünfstück (GER), Chloe Williams (WAL) and Meghan MacLaren (ENG) won the early matches. The end result 15-17 for Asia-Pacific reflects an intense afternoon. Europe eventually had to accept the defeat by Libby Steele’s strong team, including Hannah Green (AUS) and Japanese Nasa Hataoka and Hina Aragaki, who collected 3½ out of 5 points each.
Europe’s best performing player was Puk Lyng Thomsen (DEN) who stayed undefeated in her four matches by winning three and halving one. MacLaren and Fabrizio collected 3½ points out of 5.
Although Team Europe would, of course, have liked to celebrate two victories, it seems fitting that Asia-Pacific could lift the trophy in honor of late Patsy Hankins with all her three children watching this historical moment on-site.
48 players from 23 countries competed against each other in the 2016 Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies.
The next edition will take place in March, 2018, in Qatar.
