Perfect playing conditions awaited the opening groups on Wednesday in Frankfurt, as Round 1 of the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship got underway. A low-scoring opening day, which saw 64 players break par, has left a packed and international leaderboard.
Many players made the most of the three reachable par 5s on the final four holes, especially Andrea Revuelta from Spain. Entering the final five holes at -1, Revuelta carded four birdies and an eagle to finish her round and set the club-house lead at -7 in just the second group of the day.
Revuelta was later joined at the top by Sweden’s Moa Svedenskiöld, who went bogey-free for a 66 of her own. However, the leaderboard shifted once again when the final group of the day came in. England’s Sophia Fullbrook stole the spotlight, carding a bogey-free 8-under 65 to take the overnight lead. Her stellar round included two eagles and four birdies, and is the lowest ever score recorded on the women's championship layout at Frankfurter Golf Club.
France’s 15-year-old Alice Kong narrowly missed joining the group at -7, falling just one putt short to sign for a 6-under 67. She was joined at that score by Spain’s Ana Cañado and Austria’s Johanna Janisch.
Eight players finished the day at 5-under-par to sit tied for fifth place. Among them were Spain’s Balma Davalos and a crowd favorite from the host nation, former European Ladies’ Amateur Champion Paula Schulz-Hanssen.
With excellent weather expected to continue, low scores are likely again on Thursday as the championship unfolds in ideal German conditions.
