History
Rungsted Golf Club was founded in the mid-1930s by a small group of golfers. They dreamed about building a parkland course in beautiful surroundings - and in Rungsted it became a reality when they built an 18 hole golf course after drawings by the English architect C.A. MacKenzie (brother of probably more well-known track designer Alister MacKenzie, who was behind Augusta National).
Scenic area
Rungsted Golf Club is located in a scenic area with a rich wildlife. The course is set in a varied terrain with many trees, shrubs, lakes and streams - all located in a way that turns a golf round into a nature experience as well as an exciting golfing experience. The course is landed on moorland, which means that the course itself in the driest summers never dries completely, and therefore always is an exciting challenge on a soft turf and mild moist greens.
Hidden challenges
The first nine holes offer their two par-3 holes and seven par-4 holes a challeng for any golfer. The last nine holes of the course are perceived as somewhat easier - both because the par-5 holes are found here and because several of the par-4 holes are short. However, care must be taken to relieve the apparent ease of the holes, as several of them require a very accurate tee shot. Especially the last four holes of the course are known, loved and feared by many.
Big tournaments around the millennium
In the last two years of the 1990s and in the 2000 Millennium, the club was chosen to host SAS Invitational, a miniature Ryder Cup format between Scandinavia and the rest of the world. The tournament was held immediately after the British Open, and as a result, the world's absolute best players participated, several of them winning the British Open such as Mark O'Meara, Paul Lawrie, Tiger Woods and Stewart Cink.
