Harley Smith has won the 96th Portuguese International Amateur Championship, played at Amendoeira Golf Resort (Faldo Course).
The 72-hole stroke play event, organised by Portugal Golf (the Portuguese Golf Federation), marked the first counting tournament of the new Men’s European Amateur Order of Merit, adding further significance to an already prestigious championship on the European amateur calendar.
Smith delivered a composed performance across four rounds to finish on nine-under-par and secure a remarkable six-shot victory. After opening with a 71 (-1), the English player surged into contention with a superb six-under-par 66 in round two, the lowest score of the championship. Rounds of 70 (-2) and 72 (par) followed, allowing him to control the tournament over the closing stages.
Denmark’s Mads Heller and France’s Oscar Couilleau shared second place on three-under-par. Couilleau set the early pace with an opening 67 (-5), while Heller remained firmly in contention throughout the week before both players closed with level-par rounds of 72.
Sweden’s Erik Tjarnberg finished fourth at two-under-par, while England’s Kris Kim claimed fifth place on one-under-par to complete the top five.
With victory in Portugal, Harley Smith becomes the first leader of the new Men’s European Amateur Order of Merit, setting the early benchmark in the season-long race.
