France Tops 2024 EGA Medal Table After Stellar Season

27 Nov 2024

France topped the 2024 EGA Medal Table as the most successful country in European amateur championships this season.

Of the 20 gold medals available in different European-titled categories, French individuals or teams claimed an impressive nine victories in addition to six silver and two bronze medals this year.

The totals put France head and shoulders above any other country this season. They won seven more gold medals than their closest competitors, England, Sweden and Germany, who all finished the year with two championship titles.

France’s year also numerically outdoes Spain’s outstanding 2023 season which saw them win five gold medals including the European Amateur and Ladies’ individual and Team Championship titles.

Spain, Belgium, Austria and Scotland were the only other European countries to win an EGA gold medal this year with one victory each. One gold medal also goes to the USA (not included in the table of European countries above) following Tommy Morrison’s European Amateur Championship triumph.

France’s nine victories came in the following categories (chronological order):

  • European Mid-Amateur Ladies’ Championship (Alexandra Farret)

  • European Senior Men’s Championship (Rodrigo Lacerda Soares)

  • European Boys’ Team Championship

  • European Team Championship for Golfers with Disability

  • European Young Masters – Nations’ Cup

  • European Senior Men’s Team Championship

  • European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship

  • European Mid-Amateur Ladies’ Team Championship

  • European Men’s Club Trophy (St-Nom-La-Breteche)

The tally of gold medals was close to being even higher, with additional runner-up finishes for French players in the:

  • European Senior Ladies’ Championship

  • European Ladies’ Team Championship

  • European Young Masters – Boys

  • European Mid-Amateur Men’s Team Championship

  • European Ladies’ Club Trophy

'Page two' of the 2024 medal table includes all European countries winning medals in EGA events this year, led by Ireland who ended the season with a strong tally of six medals although missing a gold.

EUROPEAN TEAM SHIELDS

The European Team Shield Championships, which are designed for small and emerging golfing nations of the EGA, has its own medal table as the event isn’t counted as a European-titled category.

Turkey won both the men’s and ladies’ titles at the championship hosted by Liechtenstein this year. Andorra and Luxembourg added themselves to the men’s medal table, claiming their first medals in the event this year.

In the ladies' competition, Estonia also now appear on the table for the first time following a bronze medal finish at Gams-Werdenberg this summer.
