The Continent of Europe has won the 2021 Jacques Léglise Trophy in Sweden.
The hosts entered the final day with a one-point advantage over Great Britain & Ireland at Falsterbo Golfklubb.
The morning foursomes session went heavily in favour of the Continental team, who came close to a clean sweep of the session after securing 3.5 points out of the available 4.
That took the Continent of Europe to 10 points and within just three of winning the trophy for a second consecutive time.
Tiger Christensen didn't waste time in securing an 11th point for the continental team, winning his match on the 13th 7&5. Shortly afterward, Riccardo Fantinelli scored his second point of the day with a 3&2 win over Ruben Lindsay.
Despite Harely Smith securing a point for the visitors with a two up victory over Yannick Malik, the outcome of the match looked decided. The Continent of Europe was up in four of the remaining singles matches on the course, needing only one point to guarantee victory.
Oihan Guillamoundeguy was one down on the 16th tee, but won both of the next two holes to take a one hole lead down the 18th.
The French player would hole a three metre putt for par to win the match over the top ranked player in the field, Josh Hill, and secure the Jacques Léglise Trophy for the Continent of Europe.
"I'm so proud." said Guillamoundeguy after his match. "I'm so lucky to play for the European Team. It's just amazing."
Jaime Montojo and Joshua Hill halved their match, while Tim Wiedemeyer, Marco Florioli and Flavio Michetti added three more points for the Continent of Europe Team, bringing the final score to 16.5 - 8.5. The winning margin is the biggest in the Jacques Léglise Trophy since 2006.
"I'm very proud, very happy also" said Continent of Europe captain, Joachim Fourquet after the victory.
"I think this morning was the key, we played really well."
"I'm really happy the guys won the first matches this afternoon, it made it easier for me in terms of stress."
"My first goal is to make a team, I have players at the start of the week and I have 48 hours to make a team. They know how to play golf, I'm not here to coach them how to hit a fade or a draw, I'm here to make a team and that's it."
GB&I captain, Cameron Adam, who won his singles match against Daniel Svärd, had this to say after the match: "We took one and a half points out of eight foursomes games, it's just not good enough. It's tough to come back from that."
"As much as the result wasn't what we wanted, I think a lot of the process was good. It's quite a young team so I think this team will be back and fighting again next year."
The 2022 edition of the match will be played at Blairgowrie, Scotland.
